This lecture is of Tim’s journey through ancient and modern Japan, along the Tokaido Road between Tokyo and Kyoto which, in the Edo Period, 1600-1868, was over 500 kilometres long. Tim retraces the steps along the Tokaido, of the famous Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige, who published a series of colour woodcuts in 1833. Tim’s own prints and photos illustrating his modern-day re-enactment of the journey, along with some technical items used in lino cutting and printing will be displayed.
